What I liked about this book:
The descriptions of the special abilities and the facilities and surrounding areas were really good. A few of the characters were really interesting and the back-stories were something that I craved.
What I disliked about this book:
A few of the characters, Maximum Ride is just a shell and inside that shell, she is a meek little girl that is scared of everything. The shell is just not enough to make her intriguing. Angel, the little girl, is not an interesting character and reminds me of a spoiled brat type character.
Who I would recommend this book to:
Anyone that would like science fiction blended with fantasy written for children or pre-teens. Anyone that enjoys people that can fly.
What I felt the book was about:
Max Ride is a mutant that was made that way by scientists in a lab. She lives with her flock in a house in the mountains and forest. They live there for a while safely, but at some point the wolf-like humans(Erasers) come to find them. From then on, it’s a race against dying as the flock encounters obstacles and issues at every step of the way. Angel was taken in the initial battle and Iggy and Gasman stay behind at the home while Max, Fang, and Nudge go to rescue Angel from the School. The School is a laboratory where scientists perform disgusting tests on children. Max sees a girl in trouble on the way there and saves her only to be injured herself. She then is nursed back to health by the girls mom and teeters on emotionally breaking down. She finally leaves and finds Fang and Nudge waiting for her to advance on the School. Iggy and Gasman end up having to fight off a bunch of Erasers in order to live and not be captured themselves. They eventually join Max and the others. The whole flock gets captured and escapes. Max starts having horrible migraines and a voice starts talking to her in her head and the flock goes to New York to find the Institute to find more information on why they are the way they are and if they have parents. They find some answers when the break in to the Institute, and rescue a horde of mutant children. The ending is very disappointing as it leaves you wondering what next to the extreme! It was a nice book of science fiction, but I think that the characters could have been structured better, although this is the first book in a series, so I could be wrong as the series roles on.
