This novel is the second of a historical romance trilogy involving the Stud Club, a gentleman’s club in London, by Tessa Dare. This is Tessa Dare’s second trilogy that is out on the shelves. Twice Tempted by a Rogue is a delightful story about Rhys St. Maur, a battered and scarred war veteran, who never seems to find death even though he craves it, and the woman who owns the inn in the town he grew up in, Meredith Maddox. From the very first sentence, the reader will be devouring pages, trying to get more of the story into their brains, because this one is so very enjoyable. It picks up with Rhys heading to Buckleigh-in-the-moor to take his place as Lord, and leave just as fast, this beginning is comical and interesting. Meredith is the innkeeper and just wants to make Buckleigh-in-the-moor a respectable place where the wealthy like to stay when passing through, she has a tough time reeling in the locals, because they like to fight, each other. Rhys doesn’t believe that he will ever fall in love, and Meredith doesn’t have love on her mind anymore.
The plot of this novel focuses on the actual town of Buckleigh-in-the-moor, and all of its lovely people, including Rhys St. Maur. Rhys left his home when he was young to join the war. He also left because there were too many bad memories of his family there, this I will not disclose as I think it is a very important part of the novel. He has given up on any sort of life that would be filled with love or dreams. He meets Meredith who he knew when he lived there as a boy. She was the horse caretakers daughter. Meredith ends up wanting Rhys, after dealing with him on certain aspects of the town and the inn and Rhys wants Meredith also, but refuses to go for it, he fights temptation. Though the reader soon realizes that Meredith is pushing for it, she wants him badly.
The romance in this novel is very very very very steamy. The tension is there from the beginning and you are rooting for them to just do it! They are the most compatible couple that I have ever seen in a romance novel. They’re both strong and steadfast, refusing to give up certain things for others. It is mainly lust at first, but a ways into the story, you start to see the feelings change on one part and then shortly thereafter the other one as well. The descriptions of the feelings that each of the two main characters feel is amazing and incredibly human. You are feeling these emotions with them and you become tense as they become tense and every emotion they have to boot with that. Oh goodness, the author didn’t focus much on the hustle and bustle of class that was oh so ridiculously big in this time period. While I enjoy these situations in other books as well, it was a breath of fresh air to have one where the class wasn’t discussed in every discussion. Plus, Rhys and Meredith were one extremely hot item together. I think what I liked most about this book was that this story is one that I most associate my life with. Of course, there are many differences between actual happenings of my life and this book, but the personalities and the attributes of the characters are close to a certain special person I know and me.
The characters of this novel are completely one hundred percent believable. Given the time period this was written for, everything fits. The author was very good at paying attention to the characters personalities and how they felt. The descriptions of their facial expressions, eyes, and physical actions are some of the best that I have read. I loved all of the other characters in this book as well. Each one was like adding a cherry to an already heaping sundae of characters and greatness that was in this book. The characters grow, each and every one of them and the reader is left happy that each one has grown in a certain way. The dialogue is incredible, it’s how I would suspect normal people talked in that time period, with the ever-charming UK accent. There was one part od dialogue in particular that had me laughing out loud.
I would recommend this book to historical romance readers. Especially those looking for something that doesn’t focus on class, and a historical romance that they will never forget! This novel was so very well written and the story is beyond intriguing, you will be devouring pages like (insert something that you, in particular, devour {For me, it was cotton candy ice cream}). My only warning would be that if a reader is sensitive to love scenes, they might want to pick up something in the clean romance section instead, because the love scenes are some of the steamiest love scenes that I have ever read.
